Polske forskere bidrar til å måle universets størrelse

En forskergruppe fra Universitetet i Warszawa har nylig målt avstanden til Den Store Magellanske sky med en nøyaktighet på 2 prosent. Forskningen ble publisert i det prestisjetunge tidsskriftet Nature.

Avstanden til Den Store Magellanske sky, som ifølge de nyeste målingene er 160 tusen lysår, er av stor betydning for astrofysikk idet den kan kalles en slags kosmisk meterstav man benytter for å bestemme ekstragalaktiske avstander. I tillegg hjelper den med å beregne Hubbles konstant. Den sistnevnte er en hastighetsrate for universets ekspansjon.
